Getting Grease Out of Cotton Tees (Without Ruining the Print)

Grease stains behave differently from most other stains because they’re oil-based, not water-based — which means the usual “rinse it and toss it in the wash” instinct often sets the stain instead of removing it. Heat is the other trap: hot water and the dryer both bond oil to fabric fibers, which is exactly the wrong direction if the stain hasn’t fully lifted yet.

The one rule that matters most: no heat until the stain is gone

Never put a grease-stained shirt in the dryer, and avoid hot water, until you’ve confirmed the stain is actually out. Heat sets an oil-based stain permanently — a stain that was still liftable can become a permanent mark after a single trip through a hot dryer.

A reliable first step

Dish soap is built specifically to break down grease, which makes it a genuinely effective pretreatment — more useful here than most dedicated stain sticks. Apply a small amount directly to the stain, work it in gently with a finger or soft brush, and let it sit for a few minutes before washing in cold or warm (not hot) water.

If it’s a printed shirt

Work the dish soap into the stained area only, avoiding heavy scrubbing directly over a printed graphic, and turn the shirt inside out before washing — same protective habit that protects any print during a normal wash cycle (more detail in Stop the Peel).

Check before drying — every time

After washing, check the stain in good light before it ever goes near a dryer. If any trace remains, repeat the dish-soap pretreatment and wash again rather than drying “just to see.” Once a grease stain goes through heat, the odds of fully removing it drop sharply.

Common questions

What’s the best way to get grease out of a cotton t-shirt?

Pretreat with dish soap, worked directly into the stain, before washing — dish soap is specifically formulated to break down oil-based stains. Wash in cold or warm water, never hot, and check the stain is fully gone before drying.

Why shouldn’t you put a grease-stained shirt in the dryer?

Heat sets oil-based stains into the fabric permanently. A grease stain that could still be lifted with a cold or warm wash can become a permanent mark after just one cycle in a hot dryer.

Does grease stain removal work differently on a printed shirt?

The core method is the same, but work the dish soap into the stained area only and avoid heavy scrubbing directly over a printed graphic. Turning the shirt inside out before washing protects the print the same way it does during a normal wash.
